Migraine Food Triggers
Next is the obvious food triggers, which most people are already aware of, but I'll list the main ones: dairy in general, and particularly chocolate & cheese, plus alcohol, oranges, wheat, corn, MSG (coded 621 under ingredients), artificial sweeteners, Canola Oil - that is commonly a huge factor, and it is contained in so many foods. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for sufferers of migraines to avoid canola oil. It is very difficult to avoid because it is contained in so many foods, but often less than 1/2 teaspoon of canola oil can trigger a terrible migraine. Canola oil is found in rice crackers (the popular Sakata crackers used to be cooked in it - I’m not sure if they still are), margarine, some spreadable butters, and some frozen foods, such as chips, crumbed fish and fish fingers, plus other packaged or processed products. It is also commonly found in bottled sauces like pesto, ginger, coriander, pasta sauces, curry pastes, and many, many more. I stress to many of my clients that when they dine out they should emphasize to the waiter/waitress that they are allergic to canola oil, and to ask them to ensure that the kitchen does not use it in the preparation and cooking of their food. Also, at friends places it is best to ensure that they do not use it in the food, including the sauces and additives, that you are about to eat.
